Medway did its best to prove that home is disadvantageous, despite enjoying an aggregate 4.5 handicap superiority. One lawn was unfamiliar to both sides (having been decommissioned for two seasons by rabbits): Cheltenham won two of the three games played on it.
Graham Roberts was the most consistent player and was the nearly hero. Well ahead at lunch time, his game against Rodney Parkins was pegged down, to make way for the afternoon games (and in the hope that it would not need to be finished and Cheltenham could go home early). Unfortunately for Graham, Rodney decided to justify his notoriety for late recoveries, and after much nail biting, finally won the game by three and the match by 7.30pm!
