The 2005 National Veterans' Championship was held at Sussex County CC (Southwick) from 13-18 June. Although the entry was down on previous years, which resulted in some small blocks in which players had to play each other twice, players enjoyed Southwick's hospitality, their good lawns and good weather apart from Wednesday morning when heavy rain suspended play for about one hour.
The Veterans' Championship (The Rothwell Challenge Cup) was won by Jack Davies (Southwick) with 5 out of 5 wins; Don Gaunt (Cheltenham) was runner-up with 4 out of 5 wins.
The Felixstowe Cup (advanced level) was won for the second year by Derek Watts (Tyneside) with 6 out of 6 wins.
The Strickland Cup (h/c singles) was won by Barry Gould (Guildford & Godalming) with 3 out of 4 wins; Pamela Gooders (Southwick) was runner-up.
The Pidcock Trophy (over 70s Championship) was won by Quiller Barrett (Watford & Surbiton) with 5 out of 5 wins; Dennis Shaw (Ramsgate & Compton) was runner-up with 4 out of 5 wins.
The Over 70s' handicap singles was won by Janet Overell (Southwick) with 3 out of 4 wins.
The Meredith Cup (unrestricted handicap singles) was won by Don Gaunt (Cheltenham) who beat Fernando Ansorena (Jerez) in the final round of the Swiss.
Handicap Doubles (Swiss): The Longman Trophies (The Sussex Trugs) were won by Derek Trotman & Peter Wallace (Tyneside) 4 out of 4 wins, and The Gilbert Spoons were won by Derek & Sheila Watts (Tyneside) 3 out of 4 wins.
