I am sorry to report that, as I first suspected, the cost of rebuilding the clubhouse and the purchase of equipment following the fire at Hunstanton Croquet Club is not fully insured.
I have had a letter from Sarah Hampson, which outlines the position very clearly and I quote below several extracts to illustrate the gravity of the situation.
I returned from holiday to find our greatly loved Edwardian club house a pile of ashes. We have been unable to rescue much - the hoops are undamaged and already repainted, the Dinner Bell survived as did the cutlery and dinner plates but everything else has gone.
As our loss is total we will get the insurance money, but that will barely cover a new brick pavilion and the equipment was not insured. We have already started a Building Fund and cheques (some very generous) are already coming in.
I dare to hope that we will raise sufficient money to build a pretty basic club house and buy the necessary equipment for our lawns, so that the full programme of CA tournaments can take place.
We do need money, lots of it!!'
So there you have it. The position is not a happy one-so please make a donation now. We can ill afford to allow this famous and much loved five lawn club to whither and die. Anyone who has ever played or visited Hunstanton Croquet Club will know how important it is to restore the facilities and equipment.
Anyone who wants to make a donation, however great or small, should send a cheque, made out to Hunstanton Croquet Club, direct to: Miss Sarah Hampson, 23 Sandringham Road, Hunstanton, Norfolk PE36 5DP.All donations will be acknowledged.
It may be that there are also other ways you can contribute, either in a professional capacity or in purely manual labour terms or in ideas and offers for fund raising. Please speak up if you feel that you can help in any small way.
