Robert Fulford won the Northern Championship
26-29 Aug 2005 (Other News)
Robert Fulford beat Rutger Beijderwellen 3-1 (-6tp, +26tp, +6, +26sxp) in the final of the Championship of the North of England to retain the Faulkner Cup.
The plate event (The Tollemache Plate) was won by David Maugham, who beat Keith Aiton +5otp in a 2-ball end game.
With 16 seeds, and 5 of the current world top 6, the only surprises in the early rounds were Andrew Davies beating Dave Kibble and Jenny Williams losing to Paul Stephenson. In the quarters, which were played as best of 5 for the first time in recent years, David Maugham seemed to have lost his shooting ability and lost 3-1 to Rutger Beijderwellen, who went on to beat Jonathan Kirby in a semi-final match which took all day Sunday and had to be finished on Monday morning.
Rutger's handicap has now reduced to -2 (~500 index points up on the year!). Tim Wilkins completed his first quad (5th turn +17qp) v Ian Lines in the quarter final of the plate, and Martin Granger-Brown had his first otp after 31 years playing(losing -7otp to Jenny Williams).
