Robert Fulford retained the Championship of Surrey with consummate ease

[<<] [>>] by George Noble at Surbiton
17th June 2000 (AC - Championships)

Robert Fulford retained the Championship of Surrey with consummate ease. Perhaps most notable was the interruption to his run of triples in the event (9 last year and 6 this year prior to the final) by, of all things, an illegally tight hoop! Gale however didn't score a point in the final which Rob finished with a superb sextuple (which included a straight quad - rare even for Rob!)

Graham Gale

Cascading seeds were the main feature of this year's championship of Surrey held at Surbiton 16-18 June.

Most of the seeds had fallen on the newly laser levelled lawns six and seven and were being encouraged to sprout. A lesser number fell from the main event. Mark Avery was an early casualty which was sad because I had got 6-1 on him as overall winner from honest Kev (every decent tournament should have a bookie - I cleaned him out later on England v Germany and the 6-4 he offered against Fulford completing a sextuple in the third game of the final). The seeding committee had planned a Mulliner / Avery semi-final but that was not to be following SM's misfortune during the quarter finals.

Lawns easy, weather hot, brilliant Hazel curry on Saturday and the beer ran out at close of play on the final day.

Distinguished visitors included Toby Garrison and Graeme Roberts.
