Ashby: Tim King, Ray Mounfield, Mike O'Brian and Chris Mounfield
Tyneside: Derek Old, David Turner, John Moore and Jacob Carr
Ashby 6, Tyneside 1 was the final result after progressively worsening weather throughout the course of the match; the Ashby courts stood up very well to the downpour, losing relatively little pace despite the large amounts of standing water around the edgings and on the local roads. Derek Old was in excellent form, making Tim King work very hard to win 7-6 in their third game, and the match was also graced by the presence of John Moore who scored the win for Tyneside in the morning play.
The score is not really a fair reflection of the competitive nature of the match. The last three games finished within the space of five minutes and the final result was in doubt up to that point. Tyneside were close in all three losses, each match going to the third game (and two ending up 7-6), and could have won 4-3 if the balls had fallen slightly differently. The match (as always with this pair of teams) was held in a friendly but competitive atmosphere; Tyneside took the opportunity to blood youngster Jacob Carr, who is set to be a very good croquet player.
The Ashby players eventually held their nerve and are due to play the winners of Surbiton versus Hurlingham. The Tyneside team took the heavy rain back to the north-east with them, much to the annoyance of their families who had enjoyed a nice dry day!
