27th June 2007
(GC - Inter-Club)
Teams
Hurlingham: Nelson Morrow, Richard Hoskyns (Capt.), Peter Quinn, John Bowcott
Surbiton: Donald Beck (Capt.), Paul Salisbury, Jerry Guest, Dick Knapp
A 10:30am start avoided the traffic and fortunately the weather was kind with light breeze and very light occasional rain. Surbiton introduced Jerry for his first appearance in the GC team and he was made aware of our expectations (unbeaten in this tournament).
In the morning Dick won comfortably in two against John. Jerry won the first then lost a game to Peter before winning the 3rd 7-3. Nelson and Richard comfortably took the first game as Paul and Don acclimatised to the pace of the lawns and the fairly easy hoops. The second went to the 13th hoop which Surbiton won before comfortably winning the 3rd 7-4, despite Nelson running 10 from behind 9. Shot of the match though should go to Don nestling in the jaws of 9 from corner 4.
Lunch score Hurlingham 0-3 Surbiton. The afternoon games quickly decided the tie with Don (Nelson) and Dick (Peter) winning comfortably in two games.
Jerry again took 3 games to get his win after losing the first 7-2. The real battle was between Paul and Richard which ground to halt after each had won a game 7-3. With Surbiton 6-0 up it was time to call a halt and enjoy tea and cake.
Jerry and Paul were last seen still on the lawns playing a game of association croquet! This was probably a good choice as Putney and Hammersmith were solid after accidents adding 2 hours to the journey home.
Thanks again to Hurlingham for their hospitality and their endeavours when faced with a strong Surbiton team.
