Colchester beat Roehampton 4-2

[<<] [>>] by David Haslam at Roehampton
2nd July 2007 (AC - Longman Cup)

On the pristine Roehampton velvet a very close match resulted in a narrow win for Colchester by 4 games to 2 with the doubles unfinished. The teams comprised:

Roehampton: Brian Rees (4.5), Peter Siddall (6), Tony Salem (10) and Jean Oades (11)

Colchester: David Haslam (6), Gerry Varndell (10); George Jeffery (12) and Pam Neville (16).

In the morning Rees lost to Jeffery (-21) whilst Salem was narrowly beaten by Varndell (-4) after having one ball pegged out.

A dour struggle in the doubles was unfinished with Roehampton ahead. Rain fell over lunch but cleared to allow Colchester to gain the two wins needed from the 4 afternoon singles. Rees quickly accounted for Haslam (+22) with two outstanding breaks whilst Jean Oades beat Pam Neville (+14) in a tighter contest than the score suggests. This left two matches which had the spectators biting their nails but eventually led to Siddall losing to Varndell (-18) and Salem losing to Jeffery (-4) in what was probably the decider.
