Tyneside Midweek Tournament cancelled

After one of the two courts at Newcastle's Exhibition Park has been inundated with mud washed from the adjacent Town Moor during the annual Hoppings Week, the Tyneside Annual midweek handicap tournament (3-5 July) has had to be cancelled. Tyneside Committee members have contacted all the visiting players to inform them - all eight places in this annual event had been taken up by players from outside the club.

Tyneside Secretary, Bill Hill, will be contacting the Newcastle City Council on 2 July to discuss what remedial action can be taken and under what timescale - how does one remove several inches of mud from the top of a bowling green, given that the ditches surrounding it are also filled to the same level, without damaging the previously-existing surface? Repairing the damage to the Town Moor from the annual travelling fair may well be given priority for the Parks and Leisure Department's resources. The annual Advanced Tournament, due the first weekend in August, must be in doubt, and news on that point will be submitted as soon as possible.
