Norwich beat Watford 4-3

[<<] [>>] by Neil Chalmers at Norwich
2 Sep 2007 (AC - Longman Cup)

Norwich won a closely contested match 4-3 on slightly shaggy lawns, but in fine weather after a week's persistent rain.

Norwich: Feargal Smith (4), Neil Chalmers (6), Callum Ringer (8) and Harry Bruford (11)

Watford: John Smallbone (6), Quiller Barrett (7), Janet Lewis (8) and John Bee (8)

Morning Games

Norwich players first

Neil Chalmers and Harry Bruford lost to Janet Lewis and John Bee -7
Callum Ringer beat John Smallbone +12
Feargal Smith lost to Quiller Barrett - 4

Afternoon Games

Feargal Smith beat John Smallbone +12
Neil Chalmers lost to Quiller Barrett - 6
Callum Ringer beat Janet Lewis +20
Harry Bruford beat John Bee +24

With the fairly evenly balanced handicaps, no game involved more than 3 bisques which is a pleasant change in Longman Cup matches!

2-1 in the morning to Watford with Quiller coming from behind to pip Feargal to set the scene for an interesting afternoon. Things got exciting when Harry disposed of John in less than hour and 'wunderkind' Callum beat Janet by a lesser margin in a little over the hour. Norwich now needed one more game to win. Fortunately, Feargal was in better form than in the morning and managed score the winning point. Neil in the meantime from being well ahead against Quiller was steadily overhauled to lose by 6.

Congratulations to Callum and Quiller who won both their singles, in Quiller's case coming from behind in both games and to Harry for his whirlwind victory which earned a handicap reduction from 11 to 10. Obviously the doubles loss was down to me!
