Watford beat Huddersfield 7-0 in the first round of the 2008 Secretary's Shield competition on Thursday 22nd May at the neutral venue of Nottingham. Watford, who although the better side on the day, probably did not deserve quite such a flattering score-line. All three morning games were closely contested and all went to the full 3.5-hour time-limit as both teams had some initial lapses while getting used to the excellent but quite challenging playing conditions of the neutral Nottingham venue. But in the end Watford came out on top in all three. Then, in the afternoon singles, the Huddersfield resistance seemed to wilt a bit while Watford settled down more quickly in the unfamiliar environment, and all four games were finished within time leaving Watford with a clean sweep.
