Nottingham beat Chester 5-2 in the Secretary's Shield

Perhaps taking a while to settle in after their journey, Chester allowed Nottingham to establish a 3-0 lead in the morning sunshine, although the games were closer than the score suggests, David Guyton losing to Derek Blow -1t after a hard fought game, and John Dawson recovering strongly before eventually losing to Michael Finnigan -6.

With rain threatening after lunch, Michael Finnigan managed to produce some decent play to beat David Guyton in time for the pair to reach the pavilion and watch the rest of the match being played out on increasingly heavy lawns as the rain descended in earnest. Roger (Hard Man) Berkeley, decided not to bother with waterproofs, and positively flourished in the conditions to beat Alan Clare, while John Dawson and Peter Morgan salvaged some Chester pride by beating Derek Blow and David Woodhouse respectively.
