Broadwas beat Ashby 4-2

[<<] [>>] by John Guy at Broadwas Croquet Club
9 Jun 2013 (GC - Murphy Shield)

Broadwas beat Ashby by 4 matches to 2 with one match unfinished.

John Guy got Broadwas off to a good start beating Richard Sanville in 2 games and Janet Bedford soon extended the lead by beating Derek Buxton in the third game of a closely fought contest. The doubles game was very hard fought and lasted for 3 hours before being eventually won by Roger Wood and Margaret Lewis, who defeated Christine Mounfield and Mick Haytack in the deciding game, giving Broadwas a 3 - 0 lead at lunch.

After a superb lunch provided by Janet Barber and Gill Brooks of Broadwas, Ashby came out for the afternoon session of singles with all guns blazing.

Derek Buxton beat John Guy in the third game before Richard Sanville beat Janet Bedford on the final hoop of the third game to reduce the deficit to 3 matches to 2. Roger Wood held his nerve in a closely fought contest with Christine Mounfield to win on the final hoop of the second game, giving Broadwas and unassailable 4 - 2 lead, so the final match between Margaret Lewis and Mick Haytack remained unfinished at one game all.
