Janet Trueman won the Guildford & Godalming GC Handicap Tournament

On a glorious summer day, Guildford and Godalming hosted its first Golf Croquet handicap tournament. The event attracted a slightly disappointing entry of eight, ranging in handicap from 12 (Amanda Bentley - a beginner) to 2 (Mike Huxley - manager). The lawns, having had much work put into them over the past year, were in excellent order, and after a largely dry month were playing trickily fast.

Two groups of four were played in the morning, with the top two in each group progressing to the top group in the afternoon to play off for the first four places while the lower two in each group contested the minor placings. By lunch, the contenders had been narrowed down to Amanda Bentley (12), Mike Huxley (2), Chris Heath (8 - another beginner), all from Guildford and Godalming, and Janet Trueman (9) from Hamptworth. A fiercely contested afternoon session saw Amanda, Mike and Janet each win two games out of three. The decider was net hoops scored. Janet, by virtue of beating Amanda in her final game finished with net points of +7, Amanda had +5 and Mike zero (having conceded 23 extra turns over the course of the final three games!).

So the result was:

1st Janet Trueman (Hamptworth)

2nd Amanda Bentley (Guildford and Godalming)

3rd Mike Huxley (Guildford and Godalming)

Janet was presented with a new trophy, PJ's Pot, and then shocked everybody at the pub afterwards by announcing this was her first tournament win.
