Pauline Eames from Edgbaston CC won the Grass Roots Final

7 Sep 2013 (GC)

Saturday 7th September saw twelve hopefuls from all over the country descend on Ashby CC to attempt to become this year's Grass Roots national champion.
Despite a dire forecast the weather was kind to us, and a full day of seven rounds of progressive doubles produced four contestants for the final singles competition.
Quite remarkably two clubs each produced two semi-finalists, and moreover two of each gender! Margaret Turner from Edgebaston CC narrowly beat Graham Good from Bury CC by 7-6 in semi-final one, and Pauline Eames from Edgbaston CC also had a tight win over Derek Deadman from Bury CC by 7-5 in semi-final two.
So the final was an all ladies affair, and one could safely predict an Edgebaston player would lift the trophy! In the end Pauline Eames won comfortably with a 7-1 result over her club-mate Margaret Turner.
This was an excellent day's golf croquet and a good way for higher handicap players (9 or above) to experience tournament play. I think all present really enjoyed it, and I can only encourage all clubs to consider entering a team in next year's competition, (details can be found in the CA handbook).
Thanks to Ashby CC for hosting us, and thank you to all the players who participated in such good spirit.
