his popular advanced level event for players with handicaps between -3 and +1 was oversubscribed. The conditions were very challenging - fast lawns and firm, tight hoops.
The favourite on paper was Alain Giraud, with Nigel Polhill perhaps being his main rival. Alain lived up to his form and remained unbeaten up to sunday lunchtime, while Nigel never really mastered the conditions. Meanwhile Stephen Marsh and Andy Myers were playing well, the latter off a handicap of 1.5.
Going into the last round of the Swiss, Alain only had to beat Andy for the trophy. But he was trounced! Besides the trophy Andy gained a bundle of 'Brownie Points' and his handicap dropped to just short of +0.5.
It was good to see Philip Brabazon - now living locally to Hamptworth - returning to competitive croquet. He was rusty but gained in skills and confidence with every game.
We look forward to seeing more of Andy and Philip in future Hamptworth tournaments
