Players arriving at Sussex County CC found more activity than croquet taking place. The Club was continuing its programme with the renovation of four more lawns. So, when not watching their opponent play, players could watch the laser levelling and seeding.
Thursday saw the start of the Gilbey which was played as a Knock-Out with a consolation flexible Swiss. The final of the Knock-Out was between Chris Coull (Sussex County) and the Manager, with Chris a very convincing winner.
The Class Event was divided into four blocks.
Block A, for the Roehampton Cup, was won by Alan Cottle (Sussex County) with 5 wins out of 6.
Tim Russell (Roehampton) and Jim Field (Nailsea) both had 4 wins out of 6, but with Tim having beaten Jim was the runner-up.
Block B for the Council Cup was won by a previous winner Mary Knapp (Surbiton) with 5 wins out of 6. Chris Roberts (Phyllis Court) and David Mooney (Roehampton) both had 4 wins out of 6, but Chris had beaten David so was runner-up
Block C for the Reckitt Cup was won by Joe Prinold (Surbiton). Joe had his handicap cut on the first day from 9 to 6 by the Tournament Handicapper, which resulted in him playing in a different block. This did not deter Joe he managed 4 wins out of 5 tying with Neil Coote ( Reigate Priory). Neil having lost to Joe was runner-up.
Block D for the Stevenson Cup was won convincingly by Brian Shorney (Eardisley) with 5 wins out of 5. Quiller Barrett with 4 wins out of 5 was runner-up.
Quiller Barrett presented the trophies and thanked Sussex County for hosting the Tournament.
