Ian Norris won the Guildford & Godalming GC Handicap Tournament

22 Jun 2016 (GC)

After some last-minute enforced withdrawals, a slightly depleted group of 12 competitors fought out the fourth contest for PJ's Pot - Guildford and Godalming's annual one-day Golf Croquet handicap competition. Handicaps ranged between 0 and 11. Two all-play all blocks of 6 were followed by a final round, where the winners of each block met in the final, the runners-up met to decide 3rd and 4th places, and so on.

Conditions on the lawns were excellent and attracted positive comment, as did the sight of the new clubhouse, erected only two days previously but not yet open for business. From the playing point of view there was something of a sense of deja vu, as players who had done well in last year's event rose to the top again. The two groups were won with perfect 5 out of 5 records by Ian Norris (0), Phyllis Court and Julie Tremble (7), Guildford and Godalming.

A resolute Ian beat Julie by 7-5 in a tense final. Congratulations to Julie who, in achieving second place, went one better than her third place last year and to Ian, who set a new record for the event: 6 wins out of 6 despite conceding 45 extra turns (one more than last year's 44). We are left wondering how he can be denied a hat trick next year!

1st Ian Norris (Phyllis Court)
2nd Julie Tremble (Guildford and Godalming
3rd Janet Trueman (Hamptworth)
