The over 50s blossom in the Pendle rain

[<<] [>>] by ?? at Pendle
28th July 2002 (AC - Handicap)

The mid-week tournament began in drizzle which turned gusting and nearly continuous showers which lasted for most of the day. This was no more than we expected - why else did the cotton industry come to Lancashire!

Nevertheless a great deal of very tough and sometimes surprising croquet was played. If there was a prize for most peels then it would have been won by Robin Delves. There was however a prize for the fastest game (79minutes) which was won by Denise Hoyle.

Day two we had all dried our whites and were ready for another 9 hours of croquet. The weather had improved. The first round of doubles was played in the afternoon.

By day three we had forgotten what day of the week it was. All that could be remembered were details of how a ball had curved through 90 degrees on Lawn 2; or fell off the corners on Lawn 5.

On the last day the sun came shining through and the finals were played. These were hard fought and with no foregone conclusions. By teatime it was all over. We were left with memories of an excellent tournament; demanding croquet and delicious food. We hope Pendle will be in a position to run more tournaments next year.

Welcome - made to feel at home. Most efficiently run - 3 games a day with no time wasted between games. Lunches and teas - too easy to weight on!! Despite weather a most enjoyable tournament.
