Barbara Young wins the Symons Cup at Edgbaston Handicap Weekend.

Symons Cup; Handicap weekend at Edgbaston CC July 15th/16th

Good weather and excellent lawns gave a solid base to the weekend.

Tony Whateley began the defence of his trophy well with three wins on Saturday, being drawn to meet Esther Jones
with a similar record on Sunday morning. She used her bisques well to win and now looked favourite to
win overall. Meanwhile Barbara Young lost her first game whilst becoming familiar with the pace of the Edgbaston
lawns. Drawn to meet Esther in the final game of the event, she played the last of several fine games to take the
trophy. Barbara showed a solid style in maintaining breaks and played some cannons well to establish them.
The illness of one of the entrants required some rescheduling of games.
