Compton Open Weekend - 2018 July 28/29

Dominic Nunns won the COWhorn; Paul Castell won the COWbell

Much to the groundsman's irritation there had been virtually no rain at Compton since April and only some dedicated watering by hosepipe had kept the lawns green and moderately paced. He was certainly alone in being pleased to see Sunday's on and off precipitation, quite heavy at times with gusty winds. Perhaps the only fortunate features of the weather were that the oft-threatened thunder storms did not materialise and Saturday, although still breezy was almost dry. Three players impressed particularly: Dominic Nunns saw off all opposition undefeated, winning five of his six games by 26; Chris Coull was on top form beating both Jonathan Lamb and Ian Vincent by 25 before overcoming last year's winner, Dave Kibble, to meet Dominic in the final; and Paul Castell, having lost his opening game in the knockout, swept aside all six of his Swiss opponents to claim the COWbell. Oh, and Nigel Polhill registered two claims to fame - he was the only contestant to score hoops against Dominic, and the only one to achieve a win over Paul, despite Paul's TPO! In the third place playoff Dave Kibble proved the stronger and defeated Nigel with a triple. Peeling finishes were in rather short supply this year, only two others, both by Jonathan Lamb.
