Glynis Davies won the MARE Cup (GC B-Level)

11th August 2021 (GC)

On the eve of this tournament, 'apprehensive' did not adequately describe the manager's state of mind. The weather forecast was awful, and a player dropped out at 3pm. That was the low point. Things got better. A reserve was found within the hour, restoring the entry to 16 players.

On the day, heavy rain started just before the scheduled start time. All 16 players set out for their first games while the manager lurked in the clubhouse. It did not bode well for the rest of the day. Miraculously, after the first games finished, blue sky appeared, and the rest of the day was punctuated by only a few short sharp showers.

Morning play was in blocks of 4, with the top two in each block proceeding to the afternoon knockout while the non-qualifiers played in afternoon blocks. Play was, like the weather, changeable, with some fancied runners falling by the wayside. This pattern continued through the afternoon, but the two players who had caught the eye as producing consistency - Ian Rees and Glynis Davies - made it to the final. At this point, Glynis produced a fine display of judgment of pace, precision positioning and good hoop-running to take the game 7-4. Congratulations to all the players for coping with the weather and to the top four.

1st Glynis Davies

2nd Ian Rees

3rd Martin Burger

4th Robyn Clark
