Hurlingham GC Handicap Doubles

[<<] [>>] by Tony Bingham at Hurlingham
31st August 2021 (GC)

This popular one-day Bank Holiday Monday event was well over-subscribed and numbers had to be reduced by ballot to 16 pairs, including seven couples (though not all playing with each other!). It was a shame to have to disappoint some previous entrants. The players represented 16 different clubs and enjoyed an excellent day of doubles with a very friendly atmosphere despite the grey and surprisingly chilly conditions for August!

Six rounds of Swiss were played, double-banked on four lawns, with each game limited to 55 minutes and the extension period if required, no golden hoop. After 5 rounds three pairs had 4 wins: Andrew (0 handicap) and Helen Wilson (9) from Cheam, Robin Coates (1) and Dianne Browne (3) from Phyllis Court and Peter Adams (Caversham, 3) and Hilary Bird (Guildford, 8). The first two pairs both won their last game and net hoops were used to separate them, Andrew and Helen winning by one hoop! Peter and Hilary came equal third with Jason Carley (Watford, -1) and Louise Taylor (Merton, 3), both pairs on exactly the same net hoops. Several pairs of regulars in the event who had figured in presentations at previous events were unable to reproduce their form - new winners are always welcome. Everyone won at least one game and as ever the result was in doubt right up to the end.

There was warm appreciation for the prize-winners, for Hurlingham's beautiful courts and grounds and welcome hospitality and for Tony Bingham's management. Let's have better weather and more Hurlingham pairs next year; get your entries in on time!
