Ed Cunningham beats Stephen Mulliner in 3 straight games to take the Irish Championship

[<<] [>>] by Elizabeth Williams at Carrickmines
12th August 2000 (AC - Championships)

The Championship of Ireland Open Week concluded on Saturday Evening last with the Annual Dinner and Presentation of Prizes attended by 94 players friends and guests. A great time was had by all.
The Week came off very successfully, despite some early days hitches.

The event as is usual attracted a large number of overseas visitors, the most attractive (I am not talking about looks) being Stephen Mulliner, who came over to have a shot at the Irish Championship, Stephen who was accompanied by his wife ,daughter and two up and coming croquet players Jonathan and Ben, who took part I believe in their first big tournament, and did themselves proud.

Some good Croquet as well as bad was seen during the week, but the winner this year was the glorious sunny weather, no rain fell for the whole week. The partying and social events always play a large part during our Open week and this year we had lots of fun with plenty to eat and drink almost every night after play.

For the first time Spain was represented, no fewer than 3 players came over and brought colour to the proceedings.

The surprise of the week was the defeat of Stephen Mulliner in the Championship final -Ed Cunningham won the Trophy and brought it back to Carrickmines.
