The captains decided not to set time limits but most players struggled to make headway on Surbiton's excellent but fast lawns, so when we broke for lunch none of the morning games had finished.

In the end this was a game of two halves. The leading Surbiton pair, Jonathan Smith and Barry Holland, won their morning doubles and both their afternoon singles. By contrast it was Hurlingham's second pair, Toby Toller and Guy Hewitt, who won all four of their singles games, although all games were hard fought and went to at least four hours.

At 7 pm, with the score at 3-3, Guy Hewitt and Nick Furse resumed their pegged down morning singles. Nick was hitting with remarkable accuracy but Guy eventually triumphed at 9:41 as darkness fell, giving Hurlingham the victory after a tense six and a half hour game, a record for the Mary Rose?
