Guildford beat East Dorset 4-2

[<<] [>>] by Andrea Huxley at Unknown - not stated
20 May (GC - Inter-Club Shield)

Guildford & Godalming achieved a hard-fought win against a strong team from East Dorset. The teams were evenly matched on paper and so it proved to be. On what was a very hot day, Guildford & Godalming held a narrow lead at the lunch break 2-1, winning the two singles but losing the doubles. Rejuvenated by a splendid al fresco lunch, the players headed back onto the sun-drenched lawns for the round of four singles. The first two games to finish secured Guildford & Godalming the two points they needed to win the match. East Dorset took the 6th match to take the score to 4-2. The final match did not conclude, by mutual consent, when it was evenly poised at 1 game all and 5-5 as the result could not affect the outcome of the match and the visitors had a long journey home. Thank you to both teams for a very enjoyable day's croquet.

The teams were Guildford & Godalming: Phil Davies, Douglas Shand, John Gosden and Peter Adams. East Dorset: Andy Dochniak, Tim Hughes, Keith Southern and Sandra Allan.
