Cheltenham B level GC event

This weekend's event was quickly oversubscribed, which prompted behind the scenes discussions as to whether or not we could manage 32 for a one-day event. Although I did have some reservations, it was decided not to disappoint entries and make use of Cheltenham's 8 lawns. The day started with the 32 players seeded into 8 blocks of 4. This would then allow for the 8 block winners to go into 2 blocks of 4. The same format was used for the runners-up, 3^rd place and 4^th place blocks. Fortunately, the weather was good and players enjoyed the extra rest over lunch while I wrote out the 8 new blocks and order of play!(Note to self, get an assistant to help next year) There were 5 block winners who were undefeated, Jim Beach, Paulj Williams, Brian Jamieson, Keith Davis, and Patrick Coulter. Paul New got through on net points while Brian McCausland and Steve Durston survived a 3 way tie to win their blocks. The 2 winner's blocks were also tight affairs, with both finalists going through on net points.

The final playoff games between the 2 blocks would result in an overall position, however most people felt happy to retire after their block games with the exception of the final Patrick Coulter beat Steve Durston 7-5, while Jim Beach beat Brian Jamieson 7-6 for the 3^rd/4^th places. (All scores are on CS.) In all an excellent if not busy day on Cheltenham's lovely lawns.
