The Roehampton club held its inaugural London One Ball tournament at the weekend, with a handicap event on Saturday and the advanced level tournament on Sunday. The lawns were in very good condition, with a healthy covering of grass but playing fast. Saturday was played as an eleven round swiss with Sue Strong taking the honours and a four-way tie for second place, resolved in favour of Kevin Carter for second and Paul Castell third.
The Sunday tournament was divided into three classes with all matches played as best-of-3. All classes were close contests. Belquise Ismail beat Lillian Scayek to win the C class. In the B class (handicaps 2-8) Gina Lewis came through a series of tight tussles, including several games culminating with both players taking shots at the peg, to take first place, with Tony Fathers runner up. The A class was just as hard fought and three competitors finished on equal wins. The "quality of opponents" formula elevated Philip Brabazon to outright winner, ahead of Tom Weston and Kevin Carter. This was a very well run weekend and is a welcome addition to the autumn schedule.
