Croquet North and Yorkshire Council Constituency
Past Member
Dennis Scarr
Dennis is Chairman of Middlesbrough Croquet Club and also Chairman of Croquet North. He plays in AC tournaments throughout the North East, Yorkshire, North West and East Midlands. He has not as yet played tournaments in the 'deep south' but he feels that there is time for that. Although his focus is on AC play he has an 'authentic' GC handicap. He is also a Grade 2 AC Coach.
Dennis was introduced to croquet, like many before him, on annual family holidays at Cober Hill, near Scarborough and that exposure to the level of enthusiasm for the game he witnesses every year amongst all ages, even from those who only ever play whilst on holiday, gives him confidence that our great sport has a future.
There are challenges facing croquet in the North East and Yorkshire. Dennis believes that both Federations recognise those challenges and that that is more than half the battle. He also believes that we need to make it easy for people to discover croquet, to understand enough to play and help them get whatever they are looking for from the game - whichever code - preferably both.
Dennis's career was in Local Government, initially Committee Administration, then Strategic Housing before a final decade as a Head of Service which included developing a service integration model for Social Care, Heath and Supported Housing. He holds a BA (Hons) in Management and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education.
Dennis's family is everything - he and his wife have 2 adult children and 4 grandchildren. His Christian faith is fundamental to who he is. Football remains dear to him as is his love for the guitar. He is a Steward at Durham Cathedral and he and his wife are heavily involved in running their Local History Society.
