Twelve Counties contested the GC Inter County Championship at Southwick over the weekend of 4/5 September. Surrey brought a strong team of Don Beck, Nelson Murrow, Mike Town, Howard Cheyne and Dick Knapp and were galloping through the field and maintained a 100% record up to the start of round 9. Leicestershire were just behind with only one loss (to Surrey, with the deciding game having gone to the 13th hoop). Round 9 brought Surrey in contact with the CA Select team, led by Freda Vitty, and lost 1-2 giving hope to Leicestershire who won their round 9 match. Surrey's next game was against Somerset who started strongly and maintained their lead to take the match 2-1. Unfortunately for Leicestershire, they only managed to win one game against Glamorgan, keeping the match total balanced between the two contenders. As both of them won their final matches, the result was decided in Surrey's favour by the better games total.
