25th August 2011 (GC - Murphy Shield)

In the second semi-final of the Murphy Shield played today, 25th August,
at Letchworth, Letchworth beat Phyllis Court 4-3. The detailed results are
below.

Although it was pouring with rain when the Phyllis Court team arrived at
Letchworth, the rain soon stopped, and most of the match was played in
bright sunlight, even though it was not very warm.

It was a close match, with the result in doubt until the end of the last but
one game to finish. This was perhaps as well for the spectators? nerves as
the final game went to the 13th hoop before being won by Phyllis Court.

Despite the weather, thanks to the hard work of Letchworth's Ground
Team, the lawns were playing at their best, even if slightly slower than has
sometimes been the case in the past.

In all, it was a high standard contest and a shame that one team had to
lose.

Detailed results (Letchworth first):

Doubles: Peter Ross and Keith Rhodes lost 0-2 to Helena Fensome and
Frances Colman.

Singles:

John Skingsley (3) beat Pam Mead (4) 2-0
David Mathews (4) beat Raymond Wood (5) 2-0
