Ashby hosted the preliminary round of the Murphy Shield. All competitors had a good day and the Nottingham team found the hosts to be most hospitable. The Nottingham team reported that the results belied the tough and hard fought nature of the games.

With the morning doubles match taking a lot of time the teams lunched together with the doubles match at one game each. After lunch the singles games started, but when Nottingham won them all the last game of the doubles was abandoned.
