WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 2013 – ACCOMMODATION

General

Accommodation in London is expensive but there are deals around, especially in “budget” accommodation, for those who book early. Visitors will also wish to consider the trade-off between the convenience of being close to one of the croquet clubs involved, as against easy access to central London. It may help you to know that we expect there to be three days of play at Woking, five at Hurlingham, eight at Roehampton and nine at Surbiton. We expect that most people will want to stay in the Surbiton area because it is handy for the Surbiton Club and for the bus service to Roehampton and Hurlingham and the train service to Woking. There is also a very convenient train/underground service from Surbiton to Hurlingham but it is bus only to Roehampton. There are some good websites for accommodation around the three London clubs but we also offer a few tips below for specific places to stay. The emphasis is mainly on Surbiton because it has good links to the other clubs, Central London and a bar and café culture.

Hurlingham

Have a look at http://www.allinlondon.co.uk/stay-chelsea-and-fulham.php . The Premier Inn, next to Putney Bridge is very handy for Hurlingham buses and the underground. Try also http://www.premierinn.com/en/hotel/LONPUT/london-putney-bridge?cmp=GLBC ; they are currently offering single rooms at £49.

Roehampton

There are some very cheap offers at http://www.travelstay.com/new/London_Accommodation/London_Accommodation_in_Roehampton_Deals_1.htm?gclid=COeR7fXFsLQCFcbLtAodSWgALg but take care because not many of them are close to the Roehampton Club. Roehampton University is a better prospect http://www.roehampton.ac.uk/Accommodation/ but, at the time of writing, we don’t know much about availability and rates. We will revise this information as soon as we have information to share.

Surbiton

If you google “accommodation Surbiton” you will get a long list but many of them will be some distance from the club. For a list of those nearby try, in particular;

The Warwick Lodge, Broadway Lodge and Ditton Lodge are all reasonably close but not cheap, by budget hotels standards. Old hands among you will already have favourites but the Travelodge is very convenient for the club and the bus and, at the moment, is offering single rooms in August for £24 per night (single). http://www.travelodge.co.uk/ the croquet one is known as “London Chessington Tolworth Travelodge” but there are two more in Kingston, a short bus ride away. There have been recent online criticisms of the Tolworth Travelodge around the themes of cleanliness and maintenance. We have challenged the local management about the problem and we are assured that all problems are resolved as they arise!

The University of Kingston has halls of residence in Surbiton (Seething Wells).

They are handy for the bars and cafés and the station but a 25 minute walk to the club. It is very nice and good value and was used by the Australian Mac team in 2010. Unfortunately, they are giving priority to block bookings at the moment where “block” is defined at 10+ rooms. Online booking won’t be possible until about May but you can contact them by email at accommodation@kingston.ac.uk
