Commentary on Day 5 at Roehampton

Comments

Good afternoon from Roehampton.  Nick Parish here, commentating on the two R32 games still in progress, Death v Ormerod and Evans v Patel.  Both are at 1-1 and into the third game.

James went round third turn and is now on a tp.  He's approaching 2b and I'm guessing he's done two peels. I think it's fair to say he's made a few mistakes this morning and broken down on at least one and possibly two tps already, so this is not a done deal.

In the other games Marcus has the first break and has just run h3.

I think James has just tried to peel rover going to 3b, but it bounced off.  He now needs a straight rover peel to finish and win the match.  He has just sent peelee a yard past rover going to the ball at penult.

James is now peelrover from a foot in front.  He has a side ball and a deep ball.  Surely nothing can go wrong?  Especially with [engage Chris Clarke mode] hoops so trivial that a blind man on horseback could run them from 89 degrees.  [Disengage CC mode.]

James jawsed the peelee and then played a nice half-jump to the boundary.  Doesn't manage to cannon peelee away from behind the hoop but should be fine.  Rushes to two yards from the peg and wins.

Earlier today Kevin Beard beat Keith Aiton in straight games, the first one very scrappy and the second clinical.  And Reg beat me, also in straight games, squeaking home in the first after failing an SXP but then being handed a lifeline when his incompetent opponent clunked rover.  The second was a clinical QP.

So we have just one main game left.  Marcus is still going round.  Samir won the first game and Marcus then equalised.

The sun is shining here at Roehampton, and the lawns, as they have been all week, are extremely nippy.  The hoops are not too challenging, however (he said, ruefully).

Strangely, the Patel v Evans game has gone back onto lawn 3, which is the same lawn the first two games were played on.  Shocking management.

Marcus is now approaching 2b.  Looks like an MSL.  Yes, it is.

On lawn 2 we have two plate games.  Jeff Dawson is playing Colin Irwin and Alan Walsh is taking on Campbell Morrison.  Jeff is playing a tricky jump shot through penult.  Makes it.  He is on some kind of peeling turn.

Samir lifts the black from h4 and is taking the long lift.  Could be his last shot.  Has a refusal.  Swings again.  Misses.  Didn't look that close.  Can Marcus close it out?

Marcus cuts the rush to h1.  Has nice easy hoop which he runs to get a rush into C4.  Cuts the rush into C4 to get a cannon.  I didn't see what happened next but he now has peelee a foot away from h3.  Makes h2 and rushes back into C4 with the fourth ball about two yards in-lawn.  Looking good.

Dawson's peeling turn was an unfinished tp.  He gets to peg and penult and makes a spread but with the peg ball well off the peg.  Colin could play it from where it lies but instead takes the short shot from A Baulk.

Apologies for the delay.  Just had a phone call from my sister relaying the happy news that she has given birth to their first child, and I felt taking that was more important than croquet commentary. Many congratulations to her, her husband and their new son Joseph Nathan Pollins, aged 3 hours.  I did wonder if she had given birth when they came to watch me on Saturday at Roehampton, whether Roehampton would have given her son free life membership.

Anyway, back to the croquet.  Colin missed the lift but Jeff broke down and there has been some faffing, to give it the technical croquet term.  In the main event Marcus has done two peels and is approaching 1b with peelee a yard south of penult.  Even I'd fancy my chances of finishing from here.

Marcus has rushed into a slightly awkward position after making 1b - 1ft SSW of 4b.  Shouldn't be terminal but he'll probably have to make 3b off peelee.  Yes, he is.  Will be trying to rush across and peel rover after 3b.  Clubs the rush two yards too far.  Very disappointing.  Wouldn't have happened in New Zealand.  Tries the peel anyway, but it hits the near wire fairly full on.  Should still have no problem with the straight rover peel, though.

Peelee is an inch or so due north of the western wire of rover.  So Marcus will need to roquet it very gently from very close, or rush it out of peeling position.  Rushes third ball close, so looking good.  Crucial roquet coming up.  Plays it well and rush it dead in front at point blank range.  Gets the peel.  All over bar the shouting.

Marcus wins +26tp to take the match.

In the plate, Alan Walsh has beaten Campbell Morrison comprehensively, while Jeff and Colin are still faffing.  Finally Jeff closes the game out.

And that concludes the brief commentary from me.  All the action is now at Surbiton.  Ta-ra.
